What is DNS poisoning / DNS cache poisoning?

DNS (Domain Name System) cache poisoning in a DNS attack where hackers attempt to replace an Internet address of a host with another bogus Internet address in order to redirect users from legitimate to fake URL addresses.

These fake addresses may be phishing sites, or contain malicious code designed to take over the victim's computer.
